Regarding the recent history of Haïti, of both natural disasters and political mayhem leading to so much mortality, one could say that that country's history is "written in blood"... Sorry, being a bit emotional, I'm worried, don't have any news of my uncle who was supposed to arrive there just a few hours before the earthquake hit, and his hotel is now a pile of rubbles...

2010-01-14 [member181737]: I'm going to be unpopular in this because in modern society it's insane to pick plans which actually get rid of problems (and also because i'm hitting a note which altruism has propagated in us: we don't want to die, so we proclaim all death as bad. Same goes for conflict avoidance and it leading to passive agression). Haiti is a, generally, poor country who cannot help themselves. To my mind, aid is disastrous to life whether inside this country or not. They should be left alone. It's harsh, but this world is grossly overpopulated and we need to let those which cannot be helped fall to be replaced by something stronger and more beautiful.

They will either fall, or overcome the disaster. If they do the latter, they will have a more heroic world view: they will know that they were able to rebuild their lives without the help of others.


This'll be a great thing as we live in a society where everyone wants the stars without having to grow wings.


You can argue that it'd be different if I had family in a disaster but it wasn't when I had relatives stranded by hurricanes or falling sky-scrapers.


I consider this a dose of realism as it doesn't pander to the individual as a moral center of the universe and instead realizes that calamity, and death are natural and without such things life is stale.
  

As I've said elsewhere, it's like pruning a tree: the system (life) marches on and that is all that matters.


Losing people, or countries sucks, period. But it's natural, and will never end no matter how many times we read the bible, watch the matrix or donate money. To attempt to end them is hubris, and a destruction of hope. It's like soup kitchens: idle activity which makes us feel good about doing nothing.


All IMHO, I don't mean to hit any sore spots and I may be waxing it a bit too much, but these are things I've found will help build this world from having 5% of the population being useful, to 10% in maybe 1,000 years.

I didn’t expect any ambiguity as, to my understanding, the difference between my use of pretension, and pretense (overly affectionate one) was clear when examining its modification by the earlier statement regarding snarkiness, and the substitution of pretension (the one i didn't mean..complicated yeah, fucking English) for Snark. 

If I was being unclear, then, so be it and thanks for bringing it up to the chopping board :-)

Of course, it is admittedly so hard to try and figure out how other people think and therefore cover all possible intentions/interpretations. But the effort to do so I greatly admire :)

Actually, what I was trying to do was point out in a gentle and friendly way that the final sentence carried with it a bucket load of implications about the superiority of your writing style of that of your readers, their inability to understand your meaning because of your style, etc. None of which are flattering for your reader. Since that sentence does not form part of your argument, and could be attached to the end of any of your comments, I'm hardly attempting to critique your argument through critiquing that one sentence. (Actually, your argument didn't interest me much at all which is why I only commented on it's delivery, sorry. <_<)

In the end, I'm appreciative of what you're doing. I mean to neither flatter, nor belittle people as neither are of any use, to my mind. I know they can understand what I'm saying, but some things are harder to digest without the help of tone, body language, and such. Which, is the the little tail followed my earlier post.

It's not uncommon to find people attack side issues in order to rip apart an argument, I was just trying to cover what i could.
